Medical coding is a career that can last a life time. Since there will always be a need for doctors, there will always be a need for someone to code so the doctor can be paid. One of the best things about being a medical coding and billing professional is that you can choose to work from an office or right from the comfort of your own home. Not to mention medical coding and billing specialist make about $20,000 to $40,000 annually. Many online colleges offer a medical coding and billing course for low monthly payments, so it is not hard to start off on the right foot. Medical coding is the process of translating verbal diagnosis's and procedures into alphanumeric or numeric codes. This process was formally only done to state cause of death, now it is used to state a doctors diagnosis and what the doctor did for the patient as well. Since 1983 there has been a lot more emphasis placed on medical coding and billing because the government's completion of their first potential payment system. Now the appropriate medical codes have become extremely crucial to the billing process because of fraud. Medical coding and transcription is also used for educational purposes.
To begin working as a medical coder you need to have the specific qualifications. You need, at the very least, a diploma in medical coding and billing. Next you need to be certified, no school can certify you as a medical coding and billing specialist. To become certified you need to obtain 2 years of coding experience and pass a thorough exam. You can obtain three credentials from The American Academy of Professional Coders: the CPC, the CPC-H and the CPC-P. You can also acquire from the American Health Information Management Association one of the following credentials: the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P) and/or Certified Coding Associate (CCA). These qualifications can be achieved through a sitting exam. There are more opportunities for a medical coding and billing specialist than many other occupations. For instance a person in this field can work from home if they wanted to. For a medical coder the best thing to do is leave their options open, therefore more opportunities will be available. As a medical coding and billing professional not only could you work at home but you can work in hospitals, physicians offices, at insurance companies and much more. Medical coding and billing can be a rewarding career if one works hard to achieve that goal. |
