What Is Hospital Medical Coding?
Many people have heard the advertisements regarding the numerous hospital medical coding jobs that are available for an individual who has an education in medical coding. However, most do not fully understand what medical coding consists of. Medical coding is a form of a language that is shared in the medical community. An individual who performs this job is responsible for assigning various labels to medical conditions, exams, and procedures. These labels are called "codes". Once the medical codes are assigned to the procedures and tasks that the doctor has performed, it is then entered into a designated database. This database will be uploaded to the insurance company which will cover a percentage of the expenses incurred. This database may also be uploaded to the Federal and State Government so that individuals who receive Medicare, Medicaid, and similar health coverage programs can be covered as outlined in their eligibility. In turn, this companies and institutions reimburse the doctor. By becoming a hospital medical coder, one has the potential to join a career that is fast-paced and in wide demand. As a hospital medical coder, you can expect to make at least $30,000.00 annually. However, the minimum amount that you make will be determined by many factors. One factor is how much education that you have in medical coding. The next factor is what type of community the hospital is located in. The third factor includes what kinds of services and specialties are offered in the hospital which you are employed by. In order to obtain a career in hospital medical coding, you must be certified. The program that an individual must take in order to become certified can be done in as little as four months. However, many people take a little longer to finish the program. This allows them to maximize their potential once they begin a job as a hospital medical coder. There are two major associations that specifically deal with certifications in hospital medical coding. These are the Association of Health Information Management in America, and the American Professional Coders Association. In order to train for the certification that is required to become a hospital medical coder, it is essential to have a high school diploma. A GED is also sufficient for the certification training. There are usually no other prerequisites. It is helpful if the interested individual has an interest in the medical field. This certification can be obtained by attending a college, university, or a technical school. However, many individuals have found that it is just as beneficial to take the certification for hospital medical coding from the comfort of their own home. In order to successfully perform your job responsibilities in a career of hospital medical coding, you can expect to have your work reviewed frequently. This is where coding differs from jobs such as the one of medical transcriptions. The codes that are used to define the procedures, tests, and duties are very specific. They must be in order to be paid appropriately. It is not uncommon to be audited on a regular basis. Seeing that you use a series of numbers to code various products and services, it is a job that requires a high level of concentration and attention to detail. It is also considered to be an objective position. |
