Medical coders are somewhat like investigators. They hunt down the patient's most important diagnostic which is based on signs, symptoms and lab procedures. In order to learn medical coding, you have to learn a lot of rules. It seems that it should be pretty straightforward - the doctor gives you the diagnosis and you find the code. There are just too many guidelines that you have to follow in order to choose the correct code. Therefore, this job is just not as simple as it may appear to be. One of the main drawbacks is that there are worldwide guidelines that have to be followed for medical coding.

In order to learn medical billing and coding, you have to go back to school. You will more than likely have to take classes in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, coding and medical transcription. Another class you may have to take deals with all the health information laws like the privacy act, confidentiality, releasing information and going to court.

The time it takes to learn medical coding varies depending upon what method of study you choose. There are many schools that you may find online to further your career. Actual training may only take a few months, but it may take approximately two years to become really proficient at coding.

When you learn medical coding, a typical day for you may be that you will begin reading charts and then begin your coding. Some facilities use paper charts and others do things online. You may even get to choose which type of coding you would like to do: inpatient, surgery, outpatient or ER.

When you decide that you want to learn medical coding, know that you will have to meet challenges in your profession. Sometimes the physician documentation will not be so clear. You may have to fit bits and pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle and then finally go and ask the physician if you were correct. Sometimes just reading the charts is not enough.

When you have finally decided that you want to learn medical coding, you will have to have other skills in place that will definitely be a help to you in your profession. Having good computer skills is a must! Medical coders work with computers for much of the day and use different programs. The computers are updated on a regular basis so you will be able to have the knowledge to learn new programs. You must be very detail-oriented as a medical coder.

Finally, for those people who are interested in learning medical coding, you first need to assess the type of personality you have. If you can work independently, are good at decision-making, are detail-oriented and you are the kind of person who really does not like to interact much with people, then this is an excellent position for you. If, however, you like talking to and mingling with people then perhaps you are not suited to be a medical coder. Medical coding is like detective work and you are the detective unraveling a mystery!
